Internships at City of Refuge
City of Refuge offers unpaid internships to college students in Columbia, Missouri, that can be used for course credit and are available each fall, spring, and summer semester.
Interns play a critical role in helping us serve and empower Columbia’s refugee community. Alongside supporting day-to-day operations, each intern carries our mission forward in a focus area aligned with their career goals or field of study.
Internship Details
- Compensation: Unpaid; eligible for course credit
- Commitment: One full academic year (September–May) preferred; single-semester and summer internships also available
- Hours: Minimum of 6 hours per week during office hours, Monday–Friday, 9am–4pm
- Orientation: Required for all interns
Requirements
- Minimum 3.2 GPA
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs when necessary
- Successful completion of a criminal background check
Refugee Services Internships
Refugee Case Management
Support Case Managers by extending hospitality, engaging with guests and children, and assisting with distribution of in-office resources. Offer and guide refugee guests through supplementary program registrations, resources, and educational opportunities within City of Refuge and beyond.

Refugee Empowerment
Support Empowerment Specialists by coordinating and/or facilitating classes and programs, developing curriculum, and assisting with communication or administration needs.
Great for interest in: English Language Learning, Linguistics, Social Work, Digital Literacy, Financial Literacy.
Refugee Youth and Family Empowerment
Coordinate programming and support students from refugee backgrounds by participating in Kids Club or Youth Impact Group. Assist the Youth Empowerment Specialist in operations, administration, and programming for children, youth, and families.
Great for interest in: Elementary or Secondary Education, Social Work, Human Development and Family Studies.
Refugee Artisan Empowerment
Build Artisan Program by maintaining Artisan Studio space, strengthening the Artisan product line, and planning programming. Develop curriculum for applied English support, create educational tutorials, and foster community building.
Great for interest in: Language and Linguistics, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Arts, Sewing.
Operations and Communications Internships
Nonprofit Business Operations
Develop competency in small business management, including operational tasks, volunteer collaboration, resource allocation, and data input. Collaborate on content creation for social media platforms and promotional materials.

Nonprofit Engagement
Assist the Director of Engagement in fundraising efforts through data efficiency and strategy implementation. Plan and coordinate events to cultivate and expand donor base and support networks through outreach.

Nonprofit Communications and Media
Collaborate with the Communications Team to create and design social media content, marketing materials, and convey missional impact through digital storytelling. Assist with event coordination and implementation to enhance outreach.
